Recently, a friend of mine came to me with a problem. He had read my article Top Fashion Brands Avoided by Slave-Free Shoppers and felt guilty about the many H&M shirts hanging in his closet. Of course, he had already purchased those shirts, so the damage was, in a sense, done. Still, they served as a daily reminder that he had supported a company reported to use slave labor.
This is a common problem for many who first discover the horrors of modern day slavery. What do we do with the products we own that were made so unethically?
If you are in this situation, do not agonize over your past shopping mistake. Now that you have become educated on modern day slavery, you know to do your research before making purchases. Focus your energy on buying ethically made clothing and shopping second-hand to decrease the demand for slave-produced apparel.Â
No matter how angry you may be with the brands you have purchased from, the solution is never to destroy or throw away your clothes. If you cannot stand to keep these items of clothing, consider donating them to a homeless shelter, shelters for victims of domestic abuse, or other charities that help others in need. This way, you can help right a wrong by helping people in need instead of being wasteful.
